The Early Years Foundation Stage covers the Nursery and Reception Classes and offers an integrated two year programme of learning. This is a very important stage as it helps your child get ready for school as well as preparing them for their future learning and successes. Their early years experiences should be secure, exciting and fun, and support their development, care and learning needs.
All children learn through playing and exploring, with a mixture of child-initiated and teacher-led learning opportunities. Learning takes place both indoors and outdoors.
Through the Foundation Stage curriculum your child will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understanding through 7 areas of learning and development:
Communication and Language
Listening and attention. Understanding and speaking.
Reading and writing.
Numbers. shape, space and measure.
Understanding the World
People and communities from around the world.
Expressive Arts and Design
Exploring and using media and materials. Being imaginative.
Moving and handling. Health and self-care.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Making Relationships. Self Confidence and self awareness. Managing feelings and behaviour.
Assessment & Reporting
Throughout your child’s time in the ESK Foundation stage, the staff keep records of his progress and attainment. We regularly make observations and take photographs as evidence of his work. This evidence is then used to measure a child’s attainment against the EYFS Early Learning Goals. These are called EYFS profiles. We formally report this assessment to you through two short reports in November and then again in February, as well as an end of year report.
We are delighted to say that last year we also introduced an online blog for each child in foundation stage which is updated on a regular basis. This allows you to access their Learning Journal online using a dedicated username and password.
Pupil progress is discussed with parents at dedicated Parent/Teacher meetings in November and then again in February. Of course, we are happy to discuss your child’s progress at any time throughout the year; you simply need to make an appointment with the class teacher.
