Fungus Magazine: The Beginning
There is a group of ESK secondary students who may now remember March as a time of new beginnings – namely, the Fungus team. Established sometime around November 2016 with the encouragement of the ESK Able, Gifted & Talented programme and the library staff, this group of fourteen students had the vision of creating a published booklet of their own, which would act as a creative platform through which they could share their original work; or, to paraphrase T.S. Eliot’s words, to create a new language for the beginning of a new creative era at ESK. After nearly four months of hushed meetings, brainstorming sessions and collaborative preparation, we are thrilled to say that our first issue released in March was a success. The support we received from students, teachers, staff and even parents was overwhelming, to say the least.
The first issue comprised of original art ranging from existential poetry, to short stories in English and Turkish, comic strips, illustrations and photography, with more plans for the future. It takes incredible courage to share your work for the first time, especially when you’re prone to bouts of self-doubt (puberty being a time riddled with such dark thoughts), and as editor-in-chief I’d like to take this moment to publicly declare how proud I am of my dear friends at Fungus. You are the legendary lion-tamers to our little wild idea, the once-formidable project we decided to call Fungus. It was, and still is, a pleasure to work with you.
The release date for the second issue is set to mid-April, so stay tuned and don’t forget to grab a copy of your own!
